9 Things to Check Before You Pick a Daycare

Picking a daycare is one of the biggest calls a Katy parent makes, and the marketing all sounds the same. Here is a short, honest checklist you can take to any center you tour. We run one ourselves, so a few answers point to how Kidco does it, but the questions work anywhere.

1. How long have they been in the same building?

A center that has stayed put has a track record you can check. Kidco has been caring for Katy kids at 2437 N Fry Rd for 25+ years. Ask any center how long they have been where they are.

2. Can you see inside during the day?

You want eyes on the room, not a closed door and a promise. Kidco has cameras throughout the center. Ask whether you can see your child's classroom and who is watching.

3. Do the hours actually fit your workday?

Most centers close at 6pm, which is tight if you commute. Kidco is open 6:00am to 7:00pm, later than 9 out of 10 Katy child care centers. Check the real open and close times, not the ones on the flyer.

4. Is it licensed by the state?

Licensing means the state inspects the ratios, the safety, and the staff. Kidco is Texas licensed. Ask to see the license and the most recent inspection.

5. Are meals included, or is that extra?

Packing meals for a toddler every day adds up fast. Meals are included at Kidco. Ask what is served and whether it costs extra.

6. Is there real curriculum, or just supervision?

There is a big difference between babysitting and teaching. Kidco teaches the Frog Street curriculum from infants through Pre-K. Ask what curriculum a center uses and what a day looks like.

7. Do they handle school pickup?

If you have an older child too, transportation matters. Kidco drives to and from six area elementary schools, before and after school. Ask which schools a center covers.

8. Do they take CCS scholarships?

Childcare help through Workforce Solutions is real, and the income limits are higher than most people think. Kidco accepts CCS and does the paperwork with you. Ask whether a center is approved and whether they will help you apply.

9. How does the first week feel?

Trust your gut on the walkthrough. Are the teachers calm, do the kids look happy, does it feel like somewhere you would want to be all day? Kidco gives new families one week free and no registration fee.
